Basic Components That Comprise the Roofing System
To be able to maintain one’s home in the best condition, a homeowner should take time to know and learn about the basic structures so that when the time comes for a major repair or for an additional improvement to be done, there won’t be much of a problem in discussing thoroughly these projects with the contractor.
Once a homeowner has a firm grasp of the basic components and structures, he is able to find ways to choose the right materials for his home parts, like for example with the roofing system, knowing about the basic parts may help him decide what better roof materials should be selected. There are three important parts in the roofing system: underlayment, flashing, and shingles or tiles.
Roofing underlayment is a material that is first installed directly onto the roof deck as an added material protection from the coarse weather condition and because of this reason, most underlayment materials are water-resistant. There are three types of underlayment: the asphalt-saturated felt or commonly referred to as felt paper or tar paper, which is made up of cellulose, polyester, bitumen or asphalt; synthetic underlayment, which is basically saturated in asphalt but with the addition of a fibreglass component to give an effect of tear resistance and stability to the underlayment material; and the rubberized asphalt underlayment, which consists of asphalt and rubber polymers and is designed with a special backing which provides the waterproof seal between the underlayment and the roof deck.
It is not enough to install underlayment in the roofing system since there are areas in the roof structure that can only be protected and sealed well by using roof flashing, which functions as a sealer between roof joints to prevent water leaking through the roof. The most common material for roof flashing is the galvanized sheet metal, but some homeowners would prefer the aluminium and copper metals. There are many ways of installing roof flashing according to the areas on the roof deck, such as step flashing around the sides of the roof, chimney flashing, and saddle flashing around the top, but the measure used in installing roof flashing is by soldering.
Shingles or tiles are the outermost part of the roofing system which covers the underlayment and are the ones that are subject to the different kinds of weather condition, that is why their materials range from concrete, metal, or a good kind of wood, asphalt, clay, rubber, slate. Roof shingles are usually designed as either flat or curved tiles that interlock or overlap with each other so that water is unable to penetrate through it and there a wide array of choices depending on the cost, weight, durability, color and style.
