Among the groups that are found in North America is the Shawnee tribe and its dominant language is Algonquian. In the pre-colonial times, they were a semi-migratory nation mainly occupying places of Ohio Valley and extended to other parts. Apart from Ohio Valley, there are other places such as South Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Kansas that have been confirmed as some of the other tribal territories of the Shawnee tribe. Due to population pressure, the Shawnee tribe were forced to look for alternative territories to settle in. There are some Shawnee individuals that did not relocate to Oklahoma until after the civil war. At the beginning, the numbers of the Shawnee tribe were significant enough, but the numbers did not maintain or increase because of various circumstances. There was a war that broke out and it was between the settlers and the inhabitants and that situation contributed to the decrease in the number of the Shawnee tribe. Ailments like flu, smallpox, and fever also greatly led to the reduction in the population of Shawnee tribe.
There are various sub-nations that make up the Shawnee tribe, and Piqua Shawnee is one of them. The extra tribes that make up the Shawnee tribe are Kispoko, Chillicothe, Hathawekela, and Mequachake. The Piqua Shawnee was named after a mythical evil man who came back from death to lead a set to walk in accordance with the inordinate spirit. The manifestation of the man was through fire. The Shawnee have always maintained a good sense of tribal identity.
The fishing and hunting were mainly completed by the men who were also warriors. Being on the farm was a task for the ladies. The roles of the ladies was to cook, farm and fend for families. A majority of ceremonies that the Shawnee tribe undertook were related to the agricultural cycle. Because migration to various places was a norm to the Shawnee tribe, they got to establish other new contacts with people they found in those areas. They in some instances traded with these tribes.
The territory that was inhabited after the civil war was Oklahoma. The Piqua Shawnee symbolizes a small number of families that are interconnected and preserve the Shawnee heritage. You will not find the Shawnee in one territory but several because of how they move from place to place. The grouping has been formally recognized in some countries like Alabama and Kentucky. The principal chief, clan elders, clan men, and women make up the tribal council that is tasked with the running of the tribal affairs of the Shawnee. Things like pots, beads and wood carvings are perfectly done by the Shawnee people. Apart from the wampum beads being used as a means to trade, they were important in their culture and heritage.
