Facebook Places Safest Feature in Terms of Privacy

This is definitely because over time, numerous people and institutions alike have complained about Facebook’s approach to privacy, and it is lack of responsibility regarding the matter.  Its newest feature, called Places, is no exception to this privacy concern, that’s why it is now being questioned or investigated whether it will allow personal data links.

On the other hand, as users review this new Facebook feature, they found out that this is the safest feature so far made by Facebook in terms of privacy. In a nutshell, Places allows users to have more access to their private content than ever before. In fact, it is even safer than the service called Instant Personalization which was released last April.

Still, if you are not careful, and if you don’t adjust your privacy settings, Places will reveal information about yourself to other people. But the good thing about this newest feature is that it prompts users to adjust its privacy settings manually before being able to use it.

In other words, there is no explicit opt-in. You have to set up the choices yourself, such as whether you would like to share your check-ins to friends only or everyone.

Most Americans Spend Most of their Time on Social Networking Sites

Most Americans Spend Most of their Time on Social Networking SitesNielsen conducted a survey regarding what Americans do online most of the time. The result is that most Americans spend most of their time visiting social networking sites. These sites include Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter as the three biggest social networking sites around. The percentage increase has been growing exponentially, and this is also manifested at the lower scale, as most of the people visit the worldwide web for Facebook, and in fact, some can no longer distinguish the fine line separating Facebook from the rest of the online world.
This implies that advertisers, businesses and the like should focus more on social networking sites. These are the sites where targeted advertisements should go, because these are where the targeted audience is. In fact, Facebook has already surpassed the 500 million mark, and Twitter has just twitted it’s 20 billionth tweet.
There are still companies that pay to get their advertisement on that big Yellow pages book, but the trends show that consumers no longer spend a significant amount of time reading that book, and in fact, discard it after some time. Most consumers spend their time online, specifically on social networking sites, and so it is just logical that these companies invest more on creating advertisements on these sites.

Facebook IPO to Begin by 2012

Facebook IPO to Begin by 2012Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that they will postpone their IPO or initial public offering until the year 2012. This is because he wants Facebook to have more time to have more users than it already has. Just recently, the most popular social networking site has surpassed the 500 million mark. This period will also allow Facebook to increase their sales.
Currently, Facebook is under scrutiny after somebody used public data from Facebook users to create a sort of public directory listing. This file is downloaded and distributed online rapidly, and it really awakened a lot of people about the privacy issues of Facebook. But another hot trend is the talks of investors saying that an IPO will be held by 2011, to which they are apparently wrong.
Mark Zuckerberg, who is only 26 years old, will also benefit from the time he will gain before the IPO to improve its skills as a CEO of a company that is worth 24.9 billion dollars, with over 500 million members, and facing such issues as crucial as privacy. Facebook will also have to deal with sales that many analysts predict will certainly increase by as much as 1.4 billion dollars this year compared to about 700 million dollars last year.

How Facebook Handles Dead Members

Facebook Handling Dead MembersFacebook users who have died sometimes come up in the notifications box, urging other users to reconnect with them. For the loved ones who receive this kind of notification, it can be comforting to see their faces again, but often times and usually in the end, they will feel sad about it. Sometimes, it can be weird and even disturbing. This is the dilemma that Facebook is facing about how it deals with its dead members.

According to Meredith Chin, a spokeswoman for Facebook, this topic is a very sensitive one, and that they cannot keep up with the number of Facebook members who dies every day, in as much as they can’t keep up with the number of new users that come in every day.
There was a time in the past where most of the Facebook users belong to the younger generation. However, this has all changed, and in fact, around 6.5 million people over 65 have signed up on Facebook for the month of May. This is of course the age where people have the highest mortality rate, so Facebook will have an even harder time dealing with this concern.

Before, Facebook simply deleted the profiles when they learned that the person who owned that is dead. Now, they allow special memorial profiles for people who have died, where people can still comment but no longer receive notifications, among others.

Zynga Proud of New Game Frontierville

Zynga has become famous for its various Facebook games. FarmVille, in particular, is one of its biggest hits. Now, another idea has crossed their mind. Instead of farms with pigs, chickens, maple trees and such, they now want to bring social gamers a new perspective. They want to bring the players west and this is where FrontierVille comes in. Here, you will come across bears, rattlesnakes, wagons and the like. Zynga is expecting the game to attract millions of active Facebook users once again.

FrontierVille is released today and the company is hoping that it will bring back their once avid fans. Zynga has recently noticed that FarmVille’s popularity has declined in recent months. From 252 million users in April, only 216 million are left today.

FrontierVille is said to require more strategy than FarmVille. There are still the same repetitive things like planting and harvesting. Unlike FarmVille though, the same can be done except that it is more classier.

How can you make harvesting even classier? How about having an approved list and those on that list can harvest your crops for you? Now that’s interaction. Not only does your friend help you with some clicks, he also gets a plus to his reputation.

If you’ve played Barn Buddy before, you’d recall the feature they had of spraying your friend’s crops. In FrontierVille, you can feed livestock, chop lumber or scatter the pests on your property. Similar to Café World, you can also employ your friends. Once you have paid enough in-game cash, you can use their avatar to do some tasks in your land.

Don’t Quit Facebook Day

Facebook Privacy ConcernsThat would certainly be a better name for the failed attempt at boycotting the social networking giant. Only 34,100 of Facebook’s members vowed to quit due to the lax in privacy of the site. This finding proves that Facebook is a hard habit to break. QuitFacebookDay mentions that this does not mean that people have accepted the simplified privacy controls launched last week by Facebook. They say Facebook is just that addictive. “Quitting Facebook isn’t easy,” according to the group.

Besides the people who pledged to quit, there are also those who have done so beforehand. That is why it is difficult to measure the actual number of disgruntled Facebook members. Rather than creating a group on the site they hate so much, others just slowly disappeared.

Facebook has been under siege from media due to their privacy controversies. Users were concerned about the site’s Newsfeed feature and Beacon advertising system. The networking site was forced to remove Beacon so as not to provoke more issues.

Just this December though, a controversy hounded Facebook yet again. There was a privacy roll-back in which profiles became public all of a sudden.
Just a week ago, a lot of privacy settings and options were removed. This made no sense and apparently so is the site’s constant tinkering with the privacy settings.

Mark Zuckerburg, the chief executive of Facebook, has announced in a recent press conference that these new changes had little to no effect on advertising revenues. He also mentioned that despite these protests, Facebook is still highly recommended by users to their families and friends.
