Unusual to many, Tiger Woods is content with a 19th place finish in the recent Memorial Golf Tournament. Even more surprising is that it is in Jack Nicklaus’ tournament, one which he has won 4 times. This was his worst ever finish in the Memorial Tournament, finishing 12 strokes over Justin Rose who won brought home the champion’s trophy.

Woods however has other goals in mind. His target is the majors as well as breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record. He says he is getting into better shape for the upcoming U.S. Open. This time around he will be without a coach though.

It’s good though that Woods has gotten his sense of humor back. When teased about his 72-69-69-72 rounds, he replied, “Well, I’m capable of playing four rounds in a row. Thank you.” This is a nice improvement after everything that has happened in his life especially this last six months.

Who couldn’t forget the scandal that plagued Woods and cost him a lot of sponsors? His cheerfulness just proves that he is able to cope with any difficulty that arises in his life and he is strong enough to turn his life around.

The U.S. Open will be played at Pebble Beach which coincidentally Woods owns. He has one week to practice and has high hopes in the coming tournament. He says that he has been getting better and better with every round. “I hit some shots that I hadn’t hit in a long time,” says Tiger. Fans are enthusiastic about his performance in the forthcoming tournaments and wish him the best of luck.

Tiger Woods is stumped as he is stuck at 50th place to defend his Memorial Golf Tournament title in Dublin, Ohio. “Wish I could have been lower,” Tiger said. He certainly could have been if he did better on those par 5 holes. However, this is not the case as he mostly ended up even. His opponents got almost all birdies. His par did him no good though.

Geoff Ogilvy, the favorite in the competition, ended on the same time Thursday evening as Tiger. There was a disparity though. One was on the 9th and the other on the 18th. Ogilvy led by seven strokes and was 50 places away from Tiger too. Ogilvy got a par on the ninth and tied for first while Tiger got par on the eighteenth and tied for fiftieth.
The Memorial Tournament was held at the Muirfield Village golf course and was greeted in the morning by a downpour that delayed play for 2 hours. Later, there was another 45 minute pause because of the weather. The downpour had softened the course to the satisfaction of the leaders. Ogilvy and the other co-leaders, Rose and Fowler, capitalized on what they saw as the easiest conditions to play on.

It was obvious that they indeed found the course easier due to the downpour. On the four par 5 holes, Ogilvy and Fowler got -3. Rose got -1 but that was already better than Woods’ performance. Woods had am excuse though. It was apparent that he had only played 9 competitive rounds this year. The others had enough practice for them to be precise in their shots.

Being the world’s top golfer, Tiger Woods rakes in $110 million annually, garnering him the number one slot in Forbes magazine’s World’s Highest Paid Athletes for 2009.

Besides the fact that Woods was on “on leave” for eight months, the 33 year old golfer still managed to outperform the earnings of his closest competitors – Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Kimi Raikkonen – by almost two and half times. Bryant, Jordan and Raikkonen earned $45 million this year. Notable on the list to is that Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, who landed on the 6th spot tied with LeBron James and Phil Mickelson. Pacquiao gained much profits from successfully beating out Oscar dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton in his fights during the previous months.
