Air Compressors and How They Function
In different sectors one of the most used equipment is the air compressors as they are used in automation and assembly, agriculture, construction and the chemical manufacturing industries. The task of the air compressors is to convert the power from an electric motor or a diesel engine into stored energy form which is later released in the form of pressurized air. Pressurized air is used in the industries to power machinery and equipment. It is important that one pays attention when they are selecting a compressor, as any mistake will lead to financial losses to the company. Various kinds of air compressors are available, and thus one’s choice depends on factors such as the capacity of air, the operation methods of the compressor and also their pressure levels. When one is purchasing an air compressor, they also need to determine the cost of a given air compressor, the durability and also the ability of the compressor to balance the capacity of the air they hold and the pressure levels of the air that they release.
Three main types of compressors, based on the operation methods, are available in the market. Reciprocating compressors are the first kind of air compressors where they function as positive displacement compressors. They function by reducing the volume of the air thus increasing the pressure as they have pumps driven using pistons which are attached to the cylinders that compress and displace the air. The reciprocating compressors are further divided into direct drive compressors and the belt drive compressors where the belt-drive compressors are preferred due to their high output and durability. The reciprocating compressors are portable and thus suits traders in construction while they are also efficient.
The second kind of air compressors, which also function as positive displacement compressors, are the rotary screw air compressors. The rotary screw compressors operate using helical screws and are smoother than the pistons thus less surges and vibration than the case of reciprocating compressors. One can also decide to purchase the rotary screw compressors as they are easier to maintain and are also durable and in comparison with the reciprocating compressors they have larger air capacity. The rotary screw compressors also allow one to control the airflow as they come with variable speeds and are widely used in hospitals, construction sites and factories.
The third kind if the air compressors that one can buy is the centrifugal compressors which depend on the momentum from a rotating disk to transfer and pressurize air. They are capable of delivering extremely high pressures which are controlled by way of inlet guide vanes. Some of the applications of the centrifugal compressors include in automotive, air conditioners and refrigerators.
